Insurance Had Lapsed By 6 Days!

Question:

I was hit by a HGV on the M6 and when I phoned insurance company my policy had expired 6 days before! He hit me and is claiming I’m in the wrong!

But had letter saying I’m being reported cause they want me to pay for his damage even though his HGV wrote my car off!
